Sarawak targets STEM-driven high-income economy by 2030

SARAWAK is progressing towards becoming a high-income and developed economy by 2030, with a central focus on developing a robust science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) ecosystem.

State Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah said the initiative would empower youths with the knowledge, skills and passion needed to drive innovation, technological advancement, and sustainable growth.

“Concerns were raised about the insufficient number of graduates with STEM skills, which could potentially impact industrial and economic growth in Malaysia.

“We must intensify our efforts to promote STEM education and inspire more students to pursue careers in these critical fields,” he said at the opening of STEM Trailblazers Sarawak 2024 at University of Technology Sarawak.

He said that in line with the state’s Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, his ministry had set a target of achieving 60% enrolment in pure science.

“To realise this vision, we have spearheaded a comprehensive strategy to embed STEM education in every facet of our learning landscape while working closely with the federal Education Ministry in promoting STEM education across Sarawak,” he said.

Roland said his ministry was also focused on improving English language proficiency among students, as this was crucial in accessing global resources.

“We are also committed to creating conducive learning environments by providing resources, infrastructure and support to schools.

“An example is our common science lab, a key initiative to address the issue of insufficient laboratory facilities, especially in rural areas.”

The labs, he said, would be equipped with the necessary scientific instruments and apparatus.

“This initiative will bridge the gap in science education between urban and rural schools, ignite curiosity, improve practical skills and prepare students for the Industrial Revolution (IR) 4.0 workforce.”

Roland added that aside from investing heavily in teacher training and professional development, his ministry was also committed to launching the Sarawak Science Centre in Kuching on schedule in 2026.
