Flood-risk assessment for Bukit Assek completed

Tiang says the next move is the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Masterplan.

THE completed Sibu Cloudburst Masterplan Study paves the way for implementation of the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Plan in Sibu, Sarawak.

“Based on a briefing by Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) on the redevelopment plan, the cloudburst study, which is the downpour flood-risk assessment including soil test, is done.

“I am very grateful that the relevant authority not only surveyed the 201ha involved in the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Plan but also a 20,234ha area for holistic assessment of how to handle the challenge of cloudbursts in the next 100 years,” said Datuk Michael Tiang.

The Sarawak Public Health, Housing and Local Government Deputy Minister said this at the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Sibu Sa’ati Hall renovation completion luncheon in Kampung Datu, Sibu.

The event was launched by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

Tiang said the next move was to come up with the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Masterplan.

The cloudburst study, started in May 2023, consists of three stages – flood risk assessment, conceptual masterplan as well as the schematic masterplan and design for Bukit Assek.

The goal is to tackle the longstanding flood problem in Sibu, especially in Bukit Assek.

Tiang said the redevelopment of Bukit Assek would include comprehensive flood mitigation measures.

Meanwhile, Dr Sim, who is SUPP president, said the renovation of Sa’ati Hall was of significance to the party.

The building consisting of three shoplots was purchased in 1989 at a price of RM900,000, and paid for through donations from party members and supporters.

“This building is our home, and Sibu is our home. This is where SUPP began.

“This is where our spirit of fighting for Sarawak, with members from different backgrounds, began 65 years ago,” Dr Sim said.

Tiang said the hall was renovated at a cost of RM60,000, and hoped that the party could open it up for public use.

“They deserve to use this place because it was renovated through their support and donations,” he said.
