AVID photographers in Sibu have been urged to gear up to capture interesting moments during the Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) and the Malaysia Games (Sukma) this month.

BCF, which began yesterday, runs until Aug 17, while Sukma is from Aug 12 to 24.

Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng said August was the busiest month in Sibu.

“We have BCF and then Sukma. I want photographers here to help us capture interesting moments of the two events.

“Through your photos, it can help us promote the beauty and greatness of our town,” he said at the completion of the “Colours Of Sarawak” Photography Contest prize presentation ceremony organised by the Photographic Society of Sibu Sarawak (PSSS).

Chieng said photography was important to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of the community.

It also documented traditions and landscapes, creating visual records or photographs that could be shared with the world, he added.

“We can attract visitors from near and far, support our local economy and encourage cultural exchange.

“The photography contest provides a platform for photographers to showcase their work while promoting the destinations they shoot, creating synergies that support the growth of our state,” said Chieng.

The contest, which was divided into five categories, namely culture, nature, adventure, food and festival, attracted 132 participants.

The champion, runner-up and third place in each category received RM3,000, RM2,000 and RM1,000 respectively as prize money along with certificates.
