MBJB staff to knock on doors of ratepayers in arrears

Mohd Noorazam says MBPJ personnel will be given authority cards.

SOME 200 Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) personnel are being tasked to get defaulters to pay their assessment tax arrears, says mayor Datuk Mohd Noorazam Osman.

He said they will be given authority cards to identify themselves.

“They will meet property owners in arrears,” he said during MBJB’s full board meeting.

Mohd Noorazam added that MBJB had also allocated RM100,000 for a lucky draw programme to reward those who paid their assessment tax last year.

“The objective of the programme is to increase our income through tax collection and reduce the amount of unpaid taxes.

“This is also our way of showing appreciation to those who have been paying their taxes every year,” he said.

After the meeting, Mohd Noorazam handed over prizes worth between RM4,000 and RM8,000 to three winners of the programme.

Earlier, Mohd Noorazam said assets and items from 116 businesses operating without valid licences from January to June had been seized by MBJB.

These businesses, he said, included carwash outlets, restaurants, food courts, entertainment centres, spas and vehicle workshops.

“The enforcement operations were conducted to prompt business operators to get a valid business licence.

“We really hope they take this matter seriously, especially as licence renewal has been made easier.

“MBJB is also looking into ways to make it easier for traders whose licences have expired a long time ago to renew them after paying the fines.”

He said during the same period, MBJB also seized the belongings of 100 foreigners who were caught operating businesses illegally.

“MBJB had also taken a similar action against local traders found to have been operating stalls without a licence.

“On top of that, the council had also seized items belonging to business operators who blocked roads or walkways,” he added.
