Tactical prowess shown by kids at KL chess event

THE second Open Fide Rapid Rated Chess Championship drew 368 players, including international participants.

The event brought together a diverse group of chess enthusiasts, ranging from under six years old to under 18 players.

There was an open category with Fide Rated competitors, featuring the Best OKU (disabled), Best Women, Best Veteran and the Best IPT categories.

The two-day championship featured intense matches that showcased the participants’ remarkable skills and dedication to chess.

The atmosphere was electric as players vied for victory, displaying a high level of tactical prowess and mental acuity throughout the competition held at Pearl Point Shopping Mall in Kuala Lumpur.

Also present were Kuala Lumpur Chess Association president Dr Zaidan Zulkifli and Pearl Point Shopping Mall and Pearl Shopping Gallery marketing head Carmen Lee.

The championship attracted participants from Malaysia, Indonesia, Switzerland, Vietnam, Hong Kong, China, the Philippines, Kazakhstan, Taiwan and India.

The enthusiastic audience contributed to the vibrant and competitive spirit of the event.

The participation of players from different backgrounds and skill levels fostered an atmosphere of camaraderie and mutual respect, exemplifying the inclusive nature of the chess community.

“We would like to extend our gratitude to all participants, spectators and sponsors for their invaluable support in making the championship a success,” said Lee.

“Their enthusiasm and passion for the game were instrumental in creating an unforgettable experience for everyone involved,” she added.

The championship was organised by Pearl Point Shopping Mall and DAT Chess Centre.

The mall also sponsored cash prizes up to RM10,000.

DAT Chess Centre chief executive officer Abd Hamid Abd Majid thanked everyone who contributed to the championship’s success.

“We look forward to hosting more exciting chess events in the future as we continue to champion the intellectual and social benefits of this timeless game,” he said.

This year’s championship also received support from The Pearl KL, Jaya Grocer, OptiQ Eyewear, LAC Malaysia, Homes Harmony, Fun Car Street and Ippudo Malaysia.
