CHILDREN at 10 people’s housing projects (PPR) and public housing (PA) in Klang Valley now have something to look forward to every month.
The “Kita Untuk Kita (K2K) Juara” programme, which features a futsal clinic for children aged seven to 17, is set to run until November.
It is a collaboration between Think City, Football Association of Selangor (FAS) and PadangBolaSepak.com (PBS) – a community of sports enthusiasts.
During each two-hour session, starting at 7.30am, the children will also receive guidance from FAS coaches.
In addition to the once a month clinic, there is a basic first aid workshop for residents.
Housing projects involved in the project are PA Seri Selangor, PA Seri Sarawak, PA Hang Tuah, PA Seri Kota and PA Seri Sabah 3A, PPR Seri Cempaka, PPR Taman Mulia, PPR Desa Tun Razak, PPR Kampung Baru Hicom and PPR Lembah Subang 1.
K2K programme director Dr Shahridan Faiez Mohideen Abdul Kadir said the initiative was aimed at transforming the quality of life at low-cost housing projects.
“There have been many government programmes following the top-down approach but these alone are insufficient,” he said.
“We need to invest in programmes at community level to enhance participation and complement government efforts.”
K2K is an outfit under Think City that undertakes community empowerment initiatives to address social issues.
PBS founder and K2K project director Khalilul Rahman Mokhtaruddin said there were about 30 children taking part at each housing area.
“Since the launch in May, we have also been seeing an uptick in the number of girls registered for the programme,” he added.
Khalilul Rahman said the programme was also recruiting residents to become coaches.
“Our target is to get 20 people, who will eventually take over from the association’s coaches.
“Those selected will attend a course at FAS and be certified to coach,” he said, adding that the residents associations were asked to provide candidate names.
Shahridan and Khalilul said this during the programme at PA Seri Kota in Bandar Tun Razak.
Residents association chairman Noor Rima Mohamad said the programme was beneficial for the children.
“The units here are relatively small with only two bedrooms.
“The children need some play time to de-stress,” she said.
Also present were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s political secretary Datuk Azman Abidin, Think City managing director Hamdan Abdul Majeed and Nurul Izzah Anwar, who came on behalf of Bandar Tun Razak MP Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
