THE first ESG (environment, social and governance) centre in Kuala Lumpur has opened at Plaza The Exchange TRX to educate city dwellers on sustainable living.
ESG Centre Kuala Lumpur is an idea mooted by Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Kamarulzaman Mat Salleh.
It is meant to function as a place to share knowledge and disseminate information on the authorities’ ESG framework, which may be new to many stakeholders.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa said there were only about six or seven such centres in the country.
She said the department had plans to build two more, one in Putrajaya and another in Labuan.
“We will discuss with the local authorities concerned and are also open to collaborating with other interested local authorities that may want to follow Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s approach.
“The objective is not only to educate, but also to have a positive impact on our ecosystem, climate change, economy and community,” she said at a press conference after the launch, which was attended by Kamarulzaman.
Dr Zaliha said there was a dire need to reduce the carbon footprint in Kuala Lumpur.
“As the country’s main economic centre, we need to reduce the carbon footprint to avoid air pollution and support public health.
“The opening of the centre is timely and will enable us to collaborate with other centres around the world and work towards Kuala Lumpur being a low carbon city.
“It is my hope that there will be close collaboration between the private sector, residents, non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders on the matter,” she said.
Dr Zaliha also launched TRX City Park, an urban park that integrates city life and nature.
She said it was exciting to have so much greenery at Malaysia’s International Financial Centre.
ESG Centre Kuala Lumpur is located at 3rd Floor, Plaza The Exchange TRX.
It is open to the public daily from 10am to 6pm.
Entrance is free.
