Three Selayang businesses raided for being run by foreigners using 'Ali Baba' licences

THREE businesses in Selayang were raided after it was found to be run by foreigners using "Ali Baba licences".

A 26-member team from the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) in Wangsa Permai last night (Aug 14) found that foreigners were running the businesses using local licence holders' documents.

“This operation encountered some difficulties due to the location of the premises on the upper floor of the building," said the council.

“The premises were also secured with locked gates and had CCTVs, which was one of the reasons why the MPS has struggled to identify the activities taking place in the area,” it added in a statement.

MPS said the premises had been modified and turned into a karaoke centre as well as eatery without approval.

Checks found that the businesses were run by individuals from Bangladesh, Thailand and Myanmar.

“The businesses targeted customers from their own communities, selling only food and groceries from their home countries,” MPS stated.

The operation was led by MPS deputy president Adi Faizal Ahmad Tarmizi.

Officers confiscated liquor bottles, karaoke and audio visual equipment, CCTV as well as food products not originating from Malaysia.

The council then issued seven compounds for various offences under Food Establishment Licensing By-Laws (MPS) 2007, Licensing of Trades, Businesses and Industries By-Laws (MPS) 2007 as well as the Entertainment and Places of Entertainment Enactment 1995.

“MPS calls for the cooperation of Selayang residents who have information related to premises operating without approval, especially those run by foreign nationals, to report to the local council for further action,” it added.
