Jalur Gemilang distributed to Penang schools to foster patriotism, unity

AN ELECTED representative has distributed 2,810 Jalur Gemilang to 21 schools at Penang’s northeast district education office in celebration of National Month.

Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying said the gesture not only fostered a sense of patriotism among students but also underscored the commitment to nurturing national pride and unity within the community.

“Malaysians should feel proud flying the Jalur Gemilang as it embodies the nation’s unity, courage and aspiration.

“It is a reminder for us to uphold the legacy of independence and maintain the spirit of unity for future generations,” she said after launching the National Month and Flying Jalur Gemilang Event at SK Perempuan Island, George Town.

The schools that received the Jalur Gemilang are located within the Tanjong parliamentary constituency.

Lim, who is also Deputy Finance Minister, said Malaysians must strive towards becoming a civilised society in line with this year’s National Day theme – Malaysia Madani: Jiwa Merdeka. She said education was the cornerstone of shaping the nation’s future, and the collective duty of educators, parents and community leaders to instil values of patriotism and love for the country from a young age.

Present during the event were Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng, Northeast District education officer Mohd Zawawi Ahmad and SK Perempuan Island headmaster Barisal Bivi Shaik Dawood.

Teh, in his speech, said he would ensure the school offered a comfortable environment for students to learn.

“I hope the students can study effectively and achieve outstanding success in both extracurricular and academic pursuits.”

He believed various programmes have been planned and organised in conjunction with the National Month to ignite the love for the country.

He also thanked the event organising committee who had shown great commitment in making the event a success.

“May the relationships formed today continue to be maintained for the strengthening of our community and beloved state,” he said.

Earlier Mohd Zawawi called for schools in the district to decorate their school buildings with the Jalur Gemilang.

“Don’t hoist or decorate flags which have been used for decades, torn or worn out.

“Decorate the schools with your best Jalur Gemilang,” he said.

At the end of the programme, Lim planted a hibiscus tree at the school yard.
