New road cuts travel time from Kapit to Baleh dam

It will only take an hour to travel from Kapit to the Baleh hydroelectric project (HEP) dam in Sarawak once work on a new access road is completed.

The 73km road is from Nanga Mujong in Kapit to the dam.

Previously, the journey would take three hours by express boat on the river.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas said work on the road was at 97% and it would be completed by the end of this month.

“We are confident the project will be completed according to schedule,” he said after a site visit in Kapit.

The project is part of the state’s long-term plan to improve its road infrastructure and generate opportunities for socio-economic growth.

It is expected to facilitate construction and operation of the Baleh HEP dam, connect all settlement areas and benefit 9,200 people living along Batang Baleh.

Also present during the site visit were Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Native Law and Customs) Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat, who is also Bukit Goram assemblyman, and state Deputy Infrastructure and Port Development Minister Datuk Aidel Lariwoo.
