Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) provided free meals to 300 people as part of its broader efforts to help underprivileged communities ahead of National Day.
This is the second edition of its initiative in the Selangor capital, with the first programme taking place in May at Medan Selera Prima 2.
The aim of the initiative is to help ease the cost of living of workers, civil servants and students in its jurisdiction, by giving out meals worth RM10.
Acting deputy mayor Madiyan Baweh said the initiative was part of its strategy to assist the B40 group.
“While we recognise that providing free meals may not create a long-term impact, every bit of help matters.
“We are committed to doing what we can to support the community,” he said.
Madiyan said MBSA had plans to expand the initiative to other areas.
The next event is scheduled to be held at Jalan Kebun in Section 30 before the end of the year.
“We work closely with stalls under MBSA to ensure that both the community and business owners gain from these events,” said Madiyan.
The programme also aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly No Poverty (SDG 1) and Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11).
“It is important for us to follow the SDGs and make a difference by adhering to these goals.
“We plan to organise more events centred around these objectives,” added Madiyan.
Several individuals who received the free meals expressed their appreciation.
Jalina Zainol, 34, said eating out had become so expensive, especially in the city.
“Even a small relief like this helps reduce our daily burden,” she said.
Zulkifli Mohd Ariffin, 41, echoed the sentiment, adding, “I hope MBSA continues to organise more of such programmes in the future.”
At the event, MBSA also distributed the Jalur Gemilang.
