UNIVERSITY of Technology Sarawak (UTS) has been recognised for having Malaysia’s best Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) education for advanced skills training.

Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud presented the award to UTS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Ab Hamid.

UTS, in a statement, said the accolade was a significant milestone, aligning with the university’s vision to be a global technical university founded on science and technology.

UTS specifically received the award for the success of its innovative Bachelor of Technology Management programme, which combines technology management education with TVET courses.

The programme distinguished UTS as a leader in providing industry skills and knowledge, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to meet the demands of the modern workforce, the statement read.

Prof Khairuddin highlighted the importance of the recognition, not only for the university but also for the broader community it served.

“As the only homegrown TVET university in Sarawak, we are immensely proud to receive recognition for our commitment to excellence in education and skills development,” he said.

The achievement, he said, represented a moment of pride for the entire School of Business and Management at UTS, reflecting the hard work and dedication of the school and its staff.

“The award is a testament to the university’s ongoing efforts to elevate technical education in Malaysia and contribute to the country’s vision by becoming a global leader in advanced skills training,” added Prof Khairuddin.

As UTS continued to push the boundaries of technical and vocational education, he said the recognition served as a stepping stone towards greater achievements and a brighter future for both the university and its graduates.

Separately, UTS board chairman Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said UTS would likely reach its target of 4,000 students this September.

Speaking at the Sibu Education Expo 2024, he said SPM school-leavers who did not get an offer to pursue Matriculation courses were invited to continue their studies at UTS.

The Sarawak Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development said UTS would try to raise its ranking and the qualification standards of its students.
