Sponsors step up to help 78 undergo cataract surgeries

NO fewer than 78 individuals from the B40 group benefitted from cataract operations organised by Penang Hospital’s Ophthalmology Department.

Following the three-day Cataract Carnival 2024, department head Dr Ang Ee Ling expressed gratitude to Buddhist Tzu Chi Merits Society of Malaysia and Masmeyer Foundation for their support of the programme.

“We have been carrying out this initiative since 2016 and select needy individuals from nursing and old folks homes.“We are glad that the two charitable bodies stepped up to assist us.

“Their generosity must be applauded. We planned to use about 120 lenses for the operations but were forced to postpone some of the procedures.

“Consequently, we were able to conduct 78 procedures over the three days,” Dr Ang added during the carnival’s closing ceremony at the hospital, as reported by Buletin Mutiara.

The cataract surgeries, according to Buddhist Tzu Chi Merits Society Penang commissioner Datuk Khoo Boo Leong, was set to make a huge difference to the patients.

“It will greatly improve their quality of life, especially those from the B40 group and senior citizens in nursing homes.

“To those undergoing surgery, we pray for your speedy recovery,” he added.

Penang Hospital director Dr Goh Hin Kwang and Masmeyer Foundation managing director Datuk BK Choo were also present at the carnival’s closing ceremony.
