The frequent water supply disruptions affecting Sibujaya township and Kanowit town in Sibu Division, Sarawak, will be a thing of the past by the end of the year.
Sharing the good news was Sarawak Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, who said the Kanowit Water Supply Phase 2 project would be completed by December.
The project is currently 85.2% completed against the originally scheduled 92.6%.
“We are 7% behind scheduled progress,” he said after a project site visit.
When completed, the RM78mil project, which kicked off in August 2019, is set to improve water pressure and reliability of supply in the Durin sub-district, Kanowit and surrounding areas.
“The project, implemented by Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department, will benefit residents in Sibu Division, including Sibujaya, Nibong Tada and Machan areas too,” he added.
The project involves construction of the Durin booster station with a capacity of 1.5 million litres per day (MLD), a 3.5 MLD elevated water tank at Bukong Jagoi junction and installation of 55km-long distribution pipes from Sibu city’s Salim water treatment plant to Kanowit.
“The pipeline installation is almost completed with only 5km left to go,” he added.
Earlier, Julaihi and his deputy Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi visited the project’s Pipeline B, Bukong Jagoi reservoir and Durin booster station.
