JOHOR government is considering the implementation of a mobile application to simplify public transportation access for both Johoreans and visitors.
State housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said this move would help transform the Greater Johor Baru area into a smart city.
These plans, he said, would align with the Johor Baru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link.
“The proposed app is expected to serve as a one-stop solution for all public transportation needs, providing real-time information on bus and train routes and schedules.
“It will also integrate payment options, allowing users to plan and pay for their journeys via a single platform.
“This will be a big improvement compared to the current situation where people often have to wait at bus stops without knowing when the next bus will arrive,” he said.
Mohd Jafni said the state government’s aim was to ensure that locals and tourists could travel seamlessly across Johor.
“By simplifying the commuting experience, it will encourage the use of public transport, which is essential for reducing traffic and pollution.
“This app will be a key component of our smart city initiative, which aims to integrate technology into all aspects of urban living,” he highlighted.
He said this move would also complement the ongoing installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras with artificial intelligence (AI) features.
These will be monitored at the four local councils that fall under the Greater JB command centre, he elaborated.
He said Johor Baru City Council (MBJB), Iskandar Puteri City Council and Pasir Gudang City Council would each instal 500 CCTV cameras while the Kulai Municipal Council would instal 300.
“We are also installing smart traffic lights, parking apps and a river monitoring system that will alert the council on any risk of pollution.
“For example, in Menara MBJB, the police can come and collect the data they need at the Johor Baru Integrated Operation Command Centre for any cases that involve crime, traffic, or even flash floods,” he explained.
Additionally, he said, the local council was planning to instal panic buttons in public spaces to alert authorities in case of emergencies.
Mohd Jafni said the state was looking into introducing a smart waste collection system to improve daily life in residential areas.
“The plan is to provide smart bins in apartments, factories, hotels and city areas so that waste collectors can better manage their collection times and prioritise areas that need the most attention.
“This will require cooperation from the concessionaire.
“All of these plans are being considered under the Johor Smart City 2030 Blueprint,” he added.
