EIGHTY-eight pupils of SK Klang in Jalan Dato Hamzah waved national flags as they walked up the small hill across their school to Klang Sessions Court to mark National Day.

Accompanied by several teachers, headmistress Norshahima Nordin led the group for the 180m-walk, whereupon they were received by Klang Sessions Court judge Zulqarnain Hassan and staff.

The mini assembly began with the Merdeka declaration by magistrate Amirul Asyraf Abdul Rashid, followed by seven shouts of Merdeka.

Everyone sang the national anthem Negaraku followed by Tanggal 31 Ogos, made famous by the late Sudirman.

Norshahima said she was thankful to Zulqarnain who had requested for the event, which was aimed at instilling a sense of national pride among the young.

“As we sang Negaraku, the flags fluttering proudly in the breeze symbolised the sacrifices of our forefathers and the journey that led us to the freedom we cherish today,” she said.

Norshahima added that the event was in line with the school’s motto – “Ilmu Suluh Hidup” or Knowledge – Torch of Life.

SK Klang, established in September 1939, has a total of 603 pupils and 53 teachers.

Zulqarnain said the assembly was a testament to the unity binding all citizens as Malaysians.

“Our simple event marks the momentous occasion when Malaysia broke free from the shackles of colonial rule and emerged as a free nation.

“We celebrate Merdeka as this is a tribute to the sacrifices, courage and unwavering determination of the countless people who fought for the country’s freedom,” he said.

Pupils Zahara Izzulhasmi, Nur Naagina Ahmad Saupi and Faiz Al Hakim Mohd Noryasin, all aged 12, said the event was memorable.

“It reminds us of the harmonious nation we have inherited and enjoy today,” they said.

Coordinator of the National Day event, SK Klang teacher Siti Hajar Taib said the assembly was a collaborative effort.
