A massive Jalur Gemilang has gone up for the second year at Kuala Lumpur Tower (KL Tower) in the heart of the city to commemorate National Month celebrations.
Weighing about 70kg and measuring almost 17.4m in width and 34.7m long, the flag now flies proudly from the tower’s antenna, becoming part of the Kuala Lumpur skyline.
Made out of a special nylon material, the giant Jalur Gemilang is designed to be light enough to wave gracefully in the wind.
The choice of nylon was crucial as heavier material would prevent the flag from fluttering.
This year marks the second time KL Tower has undertaken this grand gesture that will see the flag remaining aloft until Malaysia Day on Sept 16.
Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd managing director Datuk Abdul Hamid Shaikh said the plan was to make the unboxing, unfurling and raising of the giant flag an item on the city’s calendar of events.
“We plan to do this annually, similar to New York’s Times Square Ball Drop which everyone looks forward to seeing every year.
“We want tourists to look forward to the unfurling of the giant Jalur Gemilang at KL Tower for National Day,” he said.
The choice of KL Tower as the flag’s location is a strategic one.
Nestled between the iconic Merdeka 118 and PETRONAS Twin Towers, KL Tower serves as a central point that naturally draws attention, making it the perfect site for this display.
To enhance the experience, KL Tower will continue to be illuminated with LED lights in the flag’s colours every night during the celebratory period.
Visible from about 10km away, the illuminated flag creates a stunning visual, stirring feelings of national pride and capturing the attention of visitors from around the world.
