Community, history, patriotism on full display
SOME 100,000 people thronged the streets to catch the colourful and vibrant parade to mark Malaysia’s 67th National Day in Putrajaya.
Visitors started turning up early on the eve of National Day, not wanting to miss one of the country’s biggest celebrations.
Even as a drizzle began around 8am on Aug 31, spirits were not dampened in the least.
The event kicked off with the national anthem, Negaraku, and the raising of the Jalur Gemilang accompanied by a 14-gun salute.
The spectacular parade featured 17,262 participants including 57 contingents, 22 marching bands, 343 land assets, 37 air assets and 112 service animals, as reported by Bernama.
A highlight was the participation of the Malaysia Madani community contingent dressed in full ethnic attire, some with traditional musical instruments, symbolising the country’s diverse population.
There were also loud cheers for the appearance of popular animated characters like Upin and Ipin, Boboiboy and Ejen Ali.
Excitement grew for the much-anticipated “Loud and Agile” flypast, which according to Royal Malaysian Air Force (TUDM) social media, involved almost all of its assets including carriers and fighter jets, alongside air assets from other agencies such as the army, navy, Fire and Rescue Department and police.
Those watching were not disappointed.
This was the sixth National Day parade to be held in Putrajaya since the first in 2003.
