RESIDENTS of Jalan Antoi in Kepong are demanding answers after severe flooding caused significant damage to their property and belongings.

Taman Antoi Residents Association secretary Kevin Ooi claimed that on Aug 22, the Sungai Keroh sluice gate was closed.

This caused backflow into the Taman Pusat Kepong retention pond and overflow of water onto the road.

“Water began accumulating on the road around 4pm, and by 5.15pm, nearly half of Kepong was affected.”

He said floodwaters breached the flood embankment on Jalan Antoi, affecting 54 houses.

“We want to know what happened and was a solution found,” Ooi added at a press conference at the site.

He proposed several solutions, including strengthening the drainage system in Kepong and reviewing the operations of the sluice gate to ensure it functioned optimally during downpours.

He also called for the Taman Pusat Kepong retention pond to be widened.

Collapsed drains and sewers in the area, he said, also needed to be repaired and upgraded.

He urged the Selangor Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) to consider preventive measures to protect residents and businesses near the river.

Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng’s assistant Dic Lai, who was also present, said the relevant authorities had despatched their personnel to inspect the affected areas.

“We have also written to relevant departments and ministers, requesting an explanation on the cause of the flood,” Lai said.

A resident, Wong Tien Poh, said she suffered losses of RM20,000,

“The floodwaters rose so quickly that I didn’t have time to move my furniture.”

Another resident, Chan Hong Yen, hoped the authorities would do something to ease their anxiety.

“We are always worried when there is heavy rain.

“We have to continuously monitor the water level and stay alert,” she said.
