Fitness challenge offers prizes for walkers, photographers

SERDANG residents have until Sept 30 to challenge themselves to walk 10,000 steps a day in embracing a healthy lifestyle.

They can achieve this by taking part in the community event “Walkable City Serdang 2024 – 10k Step Challenge” organised by Subang Jaya City Council’s (MBSJ) Zone 22 Residents’ Representative Council.

Councillor Tey Boon Kiat said the event was aimed at encouraging Serdang residents to walk more.

“Walking can be done in any form at any time. You can stroll after your meals or even walk to and from work.

“It brings numerous benefits such as maintaining cardiovascular health and keeping a healthy body weight.

“It reduces the risk of hypertension, high blood sugar and high cholesterol as well as alleviates anxiety and depression,” he said during the launch of the walk in Kampung Baru Seri Kembangan, Selangor.

Also present was Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki.

Participants can count their steps by using any smart device or application.

They are required to send a photo or screenshot of their daily steps to 011-2720 2735 for their progress to be recorded by the organiser.

Tey encouraged participants to form teams of two to four people to pool the number of daily steps accumulated.

“If you and your teammate each walk 5,000 steps, then your team’s total number of steps for the day is 10,000,” he said.

“The 10 teams with the highest step count will receive shopping vouchers.

“Teams coming in first, second and third places will receive shopping vouchers worth RM300, RM200 and RM100 respectively.

“Meanwhile, teams in fourth to 10th places will each receive a shopping voucher worth RM50,” he added.

Tey said the organiser partnered with local businesses to attract more participants to promote better health in Serdang.

“Participating stores offering discounts during the event period will be announced on Sept 10 via Facebook.

“Participants can collect stamps at these stores. They can redeem a mystery gift from us upon reaching six stamps.”

Wong said staying healthy would reduce reliance on others for care.

“To achieve this, we need to exercise and maintain a healthy body,” she said.

During the launch, around 100 residents participated in a 2km walk along pedestrian walkways near Sungai Kuyoh.

Besides this event, the Serdang Photography Contest 2024 encourages residents to discover and capture the town’s beauty, said Tey.

Participants are allowed to use both smartphones and cameras but can only submit one photo per person.

The winner will receive RM300 cash.

First and second runners-up will receive RM200 and RM100 respectively.

Tey said RM50 would go to participants in the honourable mention categories while the best photos would be used to make postcards.

“Anything you perceive as representative of Serdang can be used as your subject matter such as buildings, food or streets. There are no boundaries,” he added.

Participants have until Sept 30 to post their photos on Facebook with a caption of not more than 50 words.

They also need to tag @Tey Boon Kiat in their entry and utilise the hashtag #SerdangHappinessCity.
