Shah Alam’s mural competition turns Laman Seni 7 into a tourism gem

THE walls and streets of Laman Seni 7 in Shah Alam, Selangor, were rejuvenated by a street art competition held by Shah Alam City Council (MBSA).

Some 40 artists from across Malaysia took part in the competition called “Wall Battle Laman Seni 7”.

“The artists were given three weeks, between April 20 and May 10, to complete the murals at Laman Seni 7,” MBSA Corporate and Public Relations Department director Mohd Azhar Mohd Sharif said in a statement.

“The participants showed high level of commitment throughout the period to ensure the quality of the murals.”

MBSA held the event to turn the back alleys into a creative space and tourist destination by using street art as the main attraction.

Laman Seni 7 is located in the commercial centre of Section 7 in the state capital.

The competition was an initiative to rejuvenate the space since its opening in 2014.

Shah Alam mayor Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim presented the prizes to the winners in a simple ceremony.

Muhammad Suhaimi Ali was named champion and received a cash prize of RM10,000.

The runner-up was Muhammad Firdaus Omar, who won RM8,000, while Mohamad Rushdi Ahmad secured third place and received RM7,000.

Consolation prizes of RM2,500 each were presented to 13 other participants.

“The Laman Seni 7 rejuvenation project is part of MBSA’s efforts to enhance the existing tourism products in Shah Alam, in conjunction with Visit Selangor Year 2025,” said Mohd Azhar.

“MBSA is committed to continuously ensuring the availability of infrastructure and tourism products in Shah Alam.

“The city’s tourist attractions, such as Shah Alam Lake Gardens, Selangor-Japan Friendship Park and Shah Alam Zip Line, are frequented by domestic and international visitors.

“MBSA hopes that this rejuvenation project will be a catalyst for local economy and community development.

“It also provides a space and opportunity for local artists to display their artwork in a public setting,” he said.

Also present at the ceremony were Shah Alam acting deputy mayor Madiyan Baweh, Shah Alam deputy police chief Supt Ramsay Anak Embol, MBSA Community Development Department director Shahrin Ahmad and MBSA councillor Simon Siow Fun Yean.
