KLANG’S beloved public park, Dataran Klang@Padang Chetty, is undergoing a significant upgrade.

Located in the heart of the royal city’s Little India enclave, this green space is a popular gathering place for families and visitors alike.

Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) Corporate Communications Department director Norfiza Mahfiz said the park’s improvements were based on community feedback.

She said MBDK had listened to the suggestions of residents and incorporated their ideas garnered via ad hoc public surveys into the redesign elements of the 1.34ha park.

“We identified constructive suggestions for the improvements that will encourage more people to visit the park,” she said.

Dataran Klang@Padang Chetty is next to the iconic 150-year-old Sri Nagara Thendayuthapani Hindu temple managed by the Chettiar community.

Devotees often enjoy the park’s peaceful atmosphere after their Friday evening prayers.

To support the park’s transformation, Norfiza said the National Landscape Department had allocated RM500,000 for the project.

Construction was already underway, with workers seen on Monday putting up zinc barriers to cordon off the park and removing damaged decking, according to site supervisor Shahrul Nizal Abu Talib, 30.

According to Norfiza, the new design includes a wider, more accessible walkway made of Shanghai stone.

She said the existing maze of shrubs would be removed to create a more open space.

“We want to provide people with a comfortable and safe place to relax and enjoy the outdoors,” she added.

Norfiza said Dataran Klang@Padang Chetty would remain closed until Nov 18 to accommodate the construction.

The park’s jogging path will also be repaired, expected to take three months to complete.

Sri Nagara Thendayuthapani chairman Dr RM Govindan shared his support for the park’s upgrade.

“This is a valuable community asset, and I am glad to see MBDK investing in its improvements. MBDK must also manage the park properly,” he said.
