A TOTAL of 242 residents in Segamat, Johor, received free human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination shots.
It was made possible through a programme organised by Jementah assemblyman Ng Kor Sim and held in collaboration with the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM).
“The government already provides free HPV vaccinations for Form One girls in schools.
“However, many women, particularly those aged 30 to 45, have not been inoculated.
“The vaccine can reduce the risk of cervical cancer by 90%,” said Ng in a statement.
She also received a booster shot during the programme, which took place at her service centres in Jementah and Kampung Abdullah.
“The last time I was vaccinated (for HPV) was about 10 years ago,” she said.
Ng thanked NCSM’s medical officer Dr Leevyadhashiny Ganasan for leading the programme.
“I hope to make this an annual event, subject to funding,” she added.
“Several men also received the HPV vaccination. It is a misconception that it is only for women,” she said.
One of the male recipients, Ong Jia Ren, expressed appreciation for the vaccination.
Another recipient, Siti Norshyuhada Mohd Kamal, encouraged women to get vaccinated to reduce their risk of cervical cancer.
