ALL school buses should be equipped with close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to ensure students’ well-being, says Johor Women’s League (Jewel) president Thanam Visvanathan-Suresh.
This follows the TikTok posts of a school bus driver who referred to school girls he ferried as his “crush” and “kesayangan” (beloved).
Thanam said most sexual predators had no fear of committing the crime but CCTVs would act as a deterrent.
“The authorities should consider making it mandatory for school buses to instal CCTVs,” she said.
She also said sexual offences did not only relate to physical contacts but could also happen in cyberspace.
“Most children do not understand what sexual offences are and we, as adults, have the responsibility to teach them what is right and what is wrong,” she told StarMetro.
Thanam said the remarks by the driver about the school girls were wrong and unacceptable.
She said it was not something society should accept or consider trivial or a joke.
Johor Empowerment of Intellectual Women Association (Jeiwa) secretary Nurul Ashikin Noor Rahim said the mainstream media should do more to create awareness on sexual offences against children.
“The Education Ministry should hold talks with the police on sexual offences against children at schools regularly, and not only focus on bullying cases,” she said.
Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri had said via her X account that she had asked an officer from the Child Development Department to lodge a report over the videos.
Johor police subsequently nabbed the 24-year-old man in Simpang Renggam and seized his mobile phone, believed to have been used to upload the videos.
