A patriotic and community-themed event held in conjunction with Malaysia’s National Day took place at the Shah Alam Car-Free Day.

Organised by Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), the car-free day is usually held on the second Sunday of the month at Dataran Kemerdekaan in Section 14, Shah Alam.

A highlight was the Shah Alam Eco Free Market, an event held in collaboration with “Be Kind Malaysia” to promote environmental awareness and charity.

“This initiative is to encourage community participation in eco-friendly activities.

“It also serves as a platform for the public to engage in charitable activities by distributing goods for free,” MBSA corporate and public relations department director Mohd Azhar Mohd Sharif said in a statement.

“More than 100 people from the Shah Alam community set up stalls to give away for free their pre-loved goods or unwanted but still usable items, such as clothes, bags, shoes, plants, kitchenware and household items.

“Some private companies also had stalls offering essential goods or household items for free.

“To gain early entry, the public can exchange recyclable items such as plastic and glass bottles, aluminium cans and old newspapers for coupons that allow them early-bird access to Eco Free Market.”

Other activities held at the event included a Merdeka Run by the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS), Rakan Muda Merdeka Run by the Selangor Youth and Sports Department, leisure bicycle ride, a patriotic themed costume competition, lucky draw and free health screening.

Children were kept entertained with colouring sessions, a petting zoo, wall climbing as well as a mobile library and craft activities by MBSA’s Anggerik Vanilla Library.

In addition, MBSA distributed free Farm Fresh drinks and beverages to lucky visitors and had its Shah Alam on Wheels mobile office on hand to provide services such as checking and paying assessment taxes as well as traffic compounds.

MBSA also received a donation of RM15,000 from Malaysia Building Society Berhad (MBSB) in the form of food baskets, distributed to 150 beneficiaries including orphans and tahfiz students.

Shah Alam mayor Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim flagged off participants at car-free day event.

Also present were MAIS chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof, Orang Besar Daerah Petaling Datuk Emran Kadir, MBSB Group head of communications and branding Norsiah Juriani Johari, Shah Alam acting deputy mayor Madiyan Baweh, Selangor Youth and Sports Department assistant director (sports) Norazreen Sulaiman, MBSA councillor Tengku Ahmad Tengku Kasim and MBSA deputy secretary (management) Asmah Mohd Zin.
