Event also aims to raise funds for major upgrades

FOR a century, Convent Klang’s primary and secondary schools built character as well as educated tens of thousands of girls.

The primary school, SK Convent (1) Klang is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

Together with SMK Convent Klang, both schools are in need of major upgrades.

To facilitate fundraising, its board of governors is hosting a Centenary Gala Dinner on Sept 28.

The event, to be held at Hao Xiang Chi Seafood in Setia Alam, Shah Alam in Selangor, will feature performances by girls from the school.

Funds raised will enable works to prevent flash floods and to replace electrical wiring, among others.

Former student and board chairman Puan Sri Low Chu Mooi revealed that flood woes had been affecting the schools for decades.

“However, it has worsened in recent years.

“We have engaged with the authorities but there is no end to the problem.

“We need some good upgrades and we estimate the cost to be high,” she said.

For the electrical rewiring at the primary and secondary schools, Low said cost estimates were RM100,000.

“These are old institutions and over the years, many new structures and buildings have been built.

“In conjunction with the primary school’s centenary, we want to help raise as much money as possible to pay for the renovations,” she said.

Low also reminisced about her Convent schooldays.

“At the entrance to the school, we had a mini field where we would play as little children and have our physical education lessons.

“From not knowing the alphabet when I entered Standard One, I became well-educated.

“It was interesting because in school, the nuns encouraged us to speak in English while at home, my dad wanted us to speak only in Chinese. We learned to adapt,” she said.

Former board chairman and retired principal Datuk AR Peter recalled past small-scale fundraisers such as “Back to School” and “Line Dancing and Dinner”.

However, he pointed out that Convent Klang, which caters to 730 primary and 1,100 secondary school students, would benefit from a larger event as millions of ringgit were needed to renovate its many rundown areas.
