AROUND 800 Petaling Jaya residents enjoyed a fun-filled weekend participating in Petaling Jaya City Council’s (MBPJ) “Mesra Rakyat” community programme.
Launching the event, which was held in conjunction with the 67th National Day, Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Pua Pei Ling said it had benefitted the people through various activities and services.
“I saw active participation by people from different races in this programme,” she said during the event at Damansara Damai Community Hall in Petaling Jaya.
“Various booths are set up to benefit people from different age groups, including senior citizens.
“I was also told that MBPJ had set up a service counter for people to lodge complaints on various issues.
“This programme is not only targeted at the Damansara Damai community, but also serves the whole of Bukit Lanjan,” she added.
Expressing her gratitude to MBPJ for its efforts, Pua vowed to continue serving the community through various large-scale programmes.
“Two weeks ago, thousands of people gathered at this venue for the Merdeka countdown.
“Today’s programme is not the first of its kind, and it won’t be the last,” she said.
Besides celebrating National Day, the programme was also aimed at highlighting the various initiatives by MBPJ and the state government through booths and activities, said a statement by the city council.
At MBPJ’s counters, participants accessed various services such as paying assessment tax, checking the status of compounds, and licence applications.
Pua’s office and other agencies such as Air Selangor also set up booths.
Kickstarting the programmes was the Merdeka Fun Walk aimed at promoting inclusivity, in line with national goals.
The event’s attendees also participated in competitions such as the Merdeka-themed fashion competition, where children and adults unleashed their creativity in their outfits to show their love for the nation.
Other activities such as colouring contest, musical chair, sepak raga ratus, floral arrangement, sport stacking, lucky draw as well as sports competitions that included street soccer and netball were also held.
Winners of the competitions took home prizes ranging from cash to hampers.
Also present at the programme were MBPJ councillor Danny Chan and Petaling District information officer Ruddyansjah Mahtar.
Impressed by the turnout, Chan pledged to hold more of such programmes in the future.
“Your attendance today has given MBPJ confidence to organise similar events in the future,” he said.
