TRAYS of durian for as low as RM100 for 4kg were laid out for customers as part of the 67th anniversary of a hypermarket chain.

The Musang King, D24, XO, Udang Merah and D101 were among durian varieties offered for sale during the Jom Durian programme organised by Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd.

Held in conjunction with the “OhMydin Festival!” anniversary celebrations, it gave the public a chance to enjoy quality durian at lower-than-usual prices.

A collaboration with Agro Best Services, Children’s Wish Society of Malaysia (CWS) and MAE by Maybank2u, the durian sale received good response.

The anniversary celebrations, which are on until Nov 11, also offers Mydin patrons savings, contests and interesting activities worth a total of RM6.7mil.

Mydin executive director (northern region) Azmin Saduruddin said four tonnes of durian from Balik Pulau in Penang and Raub in Pahang were trucked in for the event.

While the Jom Durian programme was first held at Mydin Bukit Mertajam in Penang, the second such event will be held at Mydin Pelangi Indah in Johor on Oct 5.

From the durian sale, RM8,000 was donated to CWS as part of Mydin’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.

Tourism Malaysia deputy chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin, who launched the Jom Durian programme at Mydin Bukit Mertajam, praised the group’s CSR efforts and called on other companies to promote durian as a tourism product.

Speaking to reporters after the launch, Yeoh said Tourism Malaysia would intensify durian promotional campaigns abroad to attract more foreign tourists.

He said the agency found that tourists from China and Hong Kong especially loved Malaysian durian.

On an unrelated development, Yeoh said one of Penang’s iconic ferries had now been turned into a floating ferry museum at Tanjung Marina.

With its refurbishment 90% completed, it will be opened to the public at the end of this year.

He added that another iconic ferry in line to be turned into a floating restaurant is currently located in Queensbay seafront, Bayan Lepas.

Also present were Penang agrotechnology, food security and cooperative development committee chairman Fahmi Zainol and Mydin northern region managing director Datuk Saduruddin Gulam Hussain.
