Faulty gearbox repair leaves technician dejected

A PRINTING technician in Johor Baru, who was unhappy with the gearbox replacement in his pickup truck, will be able to get his money back from the workshop.

Johor Consumer Claims Tribunal president Lee Chee Thim ruled that claimant Teng Chun Shyan should get a refund for the RM9,940 he paid for the repairs at a workshop in Taman Sierra Perdana in Masai, Pasir Gudang.

Teng was on the way to meet his clients in the Senai industrial area on the morning of April 1, 2024, when his vehicle broke down.

The pickup truck was towed to a nearby workshop and a mechanic told Teng that the gearbox was faulty.

“The workshop gave me a choice – either repair the gearbox or replace it with a secondhand one,” Teng said when met outside the tribunal in Menara Ansar, Johor Baru.

The 52-year-old claimant said he was then referred to the workshop’s other branch in Taman Sierra Perdana for repair work.

He decided to change the faulty gearbox with a new one costing RM7,500, as the workshop claimed he would need to wait up to two weeks to source for a second-hand part.

“I paid RM7,500 via bank transfer on April 1,” he said.

The total bill came to RM9,940 and among the parts and components replaced included the compressor and filter besides changing the engine oil and coolant.

Teng collected his vehicle on May 1, having paid the balance of RM2,440 to settle the bill.

“I thought my nightmare was over after spending RM9,940 for the repairs. But every time I drove the truck, it would jerk,” he said, adding that the engine oil started to leak soon after.

Dejected, Teng went back to the workshop but they refused to entertain him.

“The truck broke down again along Jalan Besar Masai and I decided to go to another workshop for repairs,” he said.

He ended up forking out RM1,200 to a workshop in Plentong, Masai, for a second-hand gearbox.

“I’m happy as the vehicle is now in good working condition.”

Lee ordered the respondent, who did not attend the hearing, to refund RM9,940 to Teng within two weeks.
