RESIDENTS of Bandar Cassia in Batu Kawan, Penang, are set to benefit from the area’s first market that is slated for completion in two years.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who is also Batu Kawan MP, said the project that sits on 3.11ha near Taman Crescentia, was currently undergoing soil treatment works.

He said the project tender would be called in December.

He hoped that the RM60mil project, divided into two phases, would be completed in 24 months.

“I hope that this project will be completed as scheduled, as it will be the first market for the residents who very much need this facility.

“Currently, many buy their household necessities from shophouses and renovated premises.

“Upon completion of the soil treatment works, a contractor will be appointed and following this the construction of the market, a hawkers’ complex and shops can begin as early as next year,” he was quoted by Buletin Mutiara during a site visit.

It was earlier reported that upon the project completion, the public market would house more than 200 traders.

It would also be equipped with a food complex, 753 parking bays, grease traps and other facilities.

The project is under the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) but upon completion, it will be handed over to Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) as the owner.

The market will not only benefit residents in Bandar Cassia but also nearby areas in the south Seberang Perai (SPS) district, especially in Simpang Ampat and Valdor.

The project is also expected to spur the local economy in Bandar Cassia and nearby areas.

Also present during the site visit were PDC chief executive officer Datuk Aziz Bakar, MBSP councillor Teh Chuann Yien and representatives from several government-linked companies.
