The Sibu Jaya Water Festival has the potential to open up economic opportunities, says a Sarawak leader.
Sarawak Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said he was impressed with the festival crowd as it was larger than the previous year.
“I was told that more than 20,000 people attended the festival, including residents and those from faraway areas such as Bintulu.”
The Asajaya assemblyman said the festival would be able to open up economic opportunities for locals.
“In addition to benefitting residents, it will also be advantageous to local entrepreneurs,” he said.
The event attracted visitors of all ages, offering an opportunity for families to spend time together, Abdul Karim told reporters after launching the Sibu Jaya Water Festival.
He said it was the only water festival in Sarawak resembling Thailand’s Songkran Festival.
He congratulated AmCorp Bhd and Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) for successfully organising this year’s event, adding that it was better than those held in previous years.
Also present were Amcorp group chief operating officer Azlan Baqee, Sarawak Premier’s political secretary William Anut, SRDC chairman Sempura Petrus Ngelai and secretary Ng Siang Wei. ― By ANDY CHUA
