The riverine town of Kanowit, in Sarawak’s central Sibu division, has a new waterfront that is expected to be an activity hub for the people.
“This RM5.3mil waterfront will not only become a landmark for Kanowit but also a place where people can gather and celebrate events,” said Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.
He was speaking at a press conference that took place after the waterfront’s opening.
The event also saw the launch of the week-long Kanowit Festival that has been held annually since 2003.
Dr Sim described the Kanowit Waterfront as unique due to its double-decker design.
“This is my first time visiting the upper level and I find that it offers a distinctly different experience from the ground floor,” said the Sarawak Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister.
He said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg had approved the building of many waterfronts across the state as gathering spaces and to promote inclusivity.
“This demonstrates that whether in urban or rural areas, towns or cities, everyone has access to the same high-quality facilities, even if the designs differ.
“That’s what inclusivity means, and it’s what Sarawak stands for,” said Dr Sim.
Separately, he proposed the construction of a crane near the waterfront to help place powerboats into the river.
Powerboat racing is a key event in the festival.
“Perhaps we could include it under the Projek Rakyat category as it would be implemented faster compared to other projects,” said Dr Sim.
National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, who was also at the press conference, said the waterfront project was completed in April 2023.
“If we were to build it today, the cost could easily be double.
“We are grateful to the contractor for completing the project on time.
“This waterfront has become a source of pride for all of us here in Kanowit,” he said.
