Sri Hartamas pub cheers its 35 years

Now a neighbourhood cornerstone, Backyard has thrived against odds.

Live music, dining specials part of daily celebrations

BACKYARD Pub and Grill (Backyard) in Sri Hartamas, one of the longest-standing pubs in Kuala Lumpur, will mark its 35th anniversary in October.

From humble beginnings in 1989 to its familiar name today, Backyard has been a cornerstone of the neighbourhood’s social scene.

Celebrations are already in full swing and will continue through to the grand finale on Oct 5.

What began as a one-shoplot neighbourhood pub catering mainly to nearby residents, has evolved into a long-lasting three-shoplot establishment renowned for its live music scene, tasty grub and vibrant atmosphere.

Backyard has bounced back after surviving recessions and the Covid-19 pandemic as well as having to give up one of its three shoplots.

It continues to draw crowds even in midweek.

Since 1996, it has been under the steady hand of Jerry Chong.

Originally a regular customer, Chong took over the business with a partner and transformed it into the bustling venue it is today.

Live music remains the heartbeat of Backyard.

Its live music is back after a brief hiatus for part of last year, right in time for this anniversary celebration.

On offer is an exciting lineup of bands, playing everything from retro classics to country rock and pop.

Notable events in the run-up to the anniversary include nightly live performances, a pool competition, charity events and a whiskey tasting.

Current live acts on regular duties at Backyard include Kudin and Ice (Sunday), Zarsadias Brothers (Friday Rock’n’Roll), Liyia Meta and Zack (Thursday Country Rock), Mark Renesh (Tuesdays), The Sella (Saturday), DJ Calvin (Monday) and D’Constantly Band (Wednesday).

For drinks, Backyard offers a vast variety.

Over the years, it has built a reputation for its extensive whiskey selection, now boasting around 55 single malts, including some really interesting Indian ones like Indri Trini.

Chong proudly recalled partnering with a wine supplier during Backyard’s early days to introduce wines to the pub.

What started with just 10 bottles a month grew to over 200 bottles in the mid- to late 2000s.

Over in the cocktails department, their most popular tipple is still the refreshing Melaka Muse, a gin-based cocktail featuring asam boi, pineapple and lemon.

It was only added to their impressive list of cocktails barely a couple of years ago.

Food is also a significant part of Backyard’s appeal.

From local favourites to Asian and Western dishes, the pub serves a wide array of delicious options.

Their popular mutton fried rice, club sandwiches and burgers all remain staples on the menu. There is a promise of something new on the horizon.

Chong acknowledged the importance of staying connected with patrons and reaching out to new faces.

Recently, with the help of a new manager, Backyard has seen an influx of new customers.

“Our food is a big hit, apart from the live music, of course,” said Chong.

“We offer a nice mixture. It’s a one-stop bar where you get almost everything,” he said.

The ongoing celebrations for Backyard’s 35th anniversary include a variety of events and promotions.

There is their daily lineup of live band performances, food and drink specials as well as themed Asian food nights on Wednesday, featuring dishes from countries like Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

The festivities will culminate with a grand finale party on Oct 5, starting from 5pm onwards.

As Backyard celebrates its latest milestone, it is clear that this iconic establishment is more than just a pub.

Here’s to 35 years of memories and many more to come.
