IN the midst of Penang’s bustling economy, the construction industry is at the forefront of the state’s transformation, says Penang Master Builders (PMB) president Datuk Goh Teng Whoo.
He said several projects were contributing to Penang’s prosperity as well as reinforcing the industry’s role.
“The RM851mil Air Itam-Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway bypass project, now nearing its halfway mark, is just one of many developments that signal growing opportunities for Penang’s construction industry.
“Similarly, the Silicon Island land reclamation project off Permatang Damar Laut in Batu Maung is enhancing Penang’s local economy and strengthening Malaysia’s position in global technology,” he said.
Other projects Goh referred to were the RM1.5bil expansion of Penang International Airport and the Penang Mutiara Light Rail Transit Line and Penang Hill cable car projects.
“As these developments progress, they generate demand for a wide range of construction services from foundational work to specialised trades.
“Ultimately, these contribute to the broader growth of the construction industry,” he said during the association’s 147th anniversary dinner in George Town.
Goh lauded the association’s contribution in supporting the construction sector’s growth by adapting to new challenges and seizing emerging opportunities.
“We are committed to keeping pace with this growth and leading the way.
“Our goal is to attract more members who share our vision and who are ready to roll up their sleeves and contribute to the developments reshaping Penang.
“This association will play a crucial role in ensuring our members are well-positioned to take advantage of these developments, contributing meaningfully to the state’s economy,” he said.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who was present, commended the association for its role.
“The story of PMB is one of vision, resilience and innovation.
“From its humble beginnings in 1877, PMB has evolved into a respected association spearheading the development of the building and construction industry within the state,” he said.
Chow, however, emphasised that it was important to recognise evolving challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
“The construction industry is not just about building structures.
“It is about constructing the future through advancements in technology, sustainable practices and digital infrastructure,” he said, adding that as Penang Chief Minister, he was looking forward to celebrating the association’s 150th anniversary.
Some 600 people were present at the dinner, including Penang island mayor Datuk A. Rajendran and leaders of various companies in the construction industry.
Awards were also given to PMB’s long-serving members and winners of the association’s President Cup Golf Tournament that was held in July.
