Canadian pianist to lead MPO in rare KL concert on Oct 5

The MPO will be part of a special performance featuring Bach and Mozart favourites.

EVER seen someone conduct an orchestra while playing the piano at the same time?

This rare musical treat will take place at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP) in Kuala Lumpur this Saturday as the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) is led by Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt.

Hewitt’s performances of Johann Sebastian Bach’s pieces have established her as one of the composer’s foremost interpreters.

In 2020, she received the City of Leipzig Bach Medal, becoming the first woman to have won the prize since it was first given out in 2003.

Her recordings of Bach for Hyperion Records have been described as “one of the record glories of our age” by The Sunday Times.

In 2023, Hewitt’s complete catalogue became available on all major streaming platforms.

Conducting from the piano, she has led orchestras in Canada, United States, Switzerland, Austria, Hong Kong and Japan.

She has also given recitals in Denmark, United Kingdom and Italy.

Hewitt is an artist-in-residence at UK’s famous 120-year-old recital venue of Wigmore Hall in London, England.

Her debut with the MPO will enable the audience to step back in time to an age before conductors stood in front of orchestras.

In the 18th century, the concertmaster did a double duty as performer and conductor. She will perform and conduct two of Bach’s and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s most popular keyboard concertos.

They are Bach’s Keyboard Concerto No.3 in D and Keyboard Concerto No.5 in F minor as well as Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.23 in A and Piano Concerto No.20 in D minor.

Angela Hewitt Plays Mozart and Bach is happening at 8.30pm on Oct 5.
