A TOTAL of 1,176.6kg of waste was collected during World Cleanup Day in Petaling Jaya this year from 10 areas.
Last year, 874kg of waste was collected from eight areas through the programme which has been held annually in Petaling Jaya since 2018.
In conjunction with World Cleanup Day 2024, Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), in collaboration with the Housing and Local Government Ministry, launched “Malaysia Cleanup Day: Mega Cleanup Programme” in the city.
This programme involved 156 local authorities across Malaysia.
Petaling Jaya deputy mayor Aznan Hassan said World Cleanup Day is an annual programme to combat the unmanaged solid waste crisis that is causing environmental pollution.
“The objective of the programme is to raise public awareness of the need to maintain cleanliness.
“It is an integrated mega cleanup across the country,” he said during the event at a futsal court in Desa Mentari 1, PJS6.
Also present were Zone 24 MBPJ councillor Farhan Shah Ridzuan, Taman Medan constituency coordinator Halimey Abu Bakar and other MBPJ heads of departments and officers.
Three records were set in the Malaysia Book of Records through the event, namely largest simultaneous participation in a community cleanup, heaviest solid waste collected in a day and longest non-stop cleanup programme, which lasted 12 hours.
This year, there was participation from 10 areas across seven zones: Pangsapuri Tainia (Zone 3), SS 21 Damansara Uptown (Zone 5), Section 3, Petaling Jaya (Zone 15), Pangsapuri Taman Perangsang in PJS 1 (Zone 17), Jalan SS 5/1 in Kelana Jaya (Zone 21), Taman Tasik Bandaran in Kelana Jaya (Zone 22) and blocks 4, 5 and 6 in Desa Mentari, PJS 6 (Zone 24).
The collected waste will be audited by MBPJ’s Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Department and the results will be entered into a data collection system by the ministry.
