THE Penang Island City Council has been asked to continuously monitor the safety of trees especially during the current wet spell.
Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying reminded the council of the need for more stringent preventive measures to avert potential incidents.
On Sept 18, two people were crushed to death after strong winds toppled fig trees and a clump of ornamental bamboo onto their car at the Pinang Peranakan Mansion on Church Street.
The victims, identified as Chinese nationals Liu Zhu, 59, and his daughter, Liu Xinxin, 36, died on the spot.
Zhu’s son Yu Hui, and Xinxin’s husband Wang Geng Feng, came to Penang to manage funeral arrangements.
Lim, through her service centre, gave each of them RM5,000 as a condolence gesture.
Lim, who was abroad on official duties, arranged for Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng to represent her in handing over the contribution and extending her condolences to the victims’ families.
She also assured the families that her service centre was ready to provide further support. — By BERNARD SEE
