Major roadworks in Johor to be done only at night

ROADworks at major locations around Johor will only be carried out at night to minimise traffic congestion during peak hours.

Johor works, transportation, infrastructure and communication committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh cited roadworks at the Skudai highway heading towards Johor Baru, where works are only carried out at night.

“If the road has three lanes such as the ones along Skudai highway, then only one lane will be closed to allow work to be done.”

He added that the Highway Development and Management Model Version Four (HDM-4), helps the authorities determine in advance when roads will be damaged.

“By upgrading before more of the road is damaged, we will be able to avoid major works as well as reduce the cost to repair it,” said Mohamad Fazli, who is also Bukit Pasir assemblyman.

HDM-4 are a set of computer-based analytical tools designed to support decision making on road management and the expansion of traffic capacity.

Mohamad Fazli said through the HDM-4, authorities were able to identify seven locations along the Skudai highway that required immediate rectification.

He said upgrading works would only be done at one location at a time to prevent congestion along the highway.Mohamad Fazili noted the state government had set up a task force to look into traffic congestion in Johor, particularly Johor Baru.

“The task force consists of various departments and agencies such as local councils, police, Johor Public Transport Corporation (PAJ) and state Public Works Department (JKR).

“We are aware that traffic congestion, especially within Johor Baru, is getting from bad to worse.

“The state government, through the task force, is working hard to find both long-term and short-term solutions,” he told StarMetro.

Mohamad Fazli said for the long-term, the taskforce was studying the viability of Johor Baru and nearby areas having either the autonomous rapid transit (ART) or light rail transit (LRT) systems.

“We are looking at other ways to reduce traffic congestion.

“This includes placing traffic police at major locations during peak hours,” he said.
