THE QR code to access an ewaste pick-up service in Selangor will be displayed at selected grocery stores.

Following the July launch of Selangor government’s ewaste doorstep pick-up service for households, the state has partnered with GCH Retail Sdn Bhd (GCH Retail) to raise awareness of the initiative.

Selangor public health and environment committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the partnership enabled better reach as the QR code would be displayed in 16 Giant hypermarkets and supermarkets, as well as neighbourhood community family grocery store TMC You City.

“Ewaste contains toxic materials that are harmful to the environment if not disposed of properly.

“The toxins may seep into the earth and enter into water sources, affecting the lives of animals and mankind.

“The state has collaborated with Electronic Recycling Through Heroes (ERTH), a registered ewaste collection company, to provide doorstep pickup service and ensure that ewaste is disposed of sustainably.

“With a QR code that connects to the collection application displayed at convenient spots, people have easy access to arrange for a pick-up,” she said.

“The service is free for those with five or more items at a pick-up point,” she added.

Earlier, StarMetro had reported that the ewaste doorstep pickup service was a RM500,000 pilot project by the state, in collaboration with Maxis Bhd and ERTH, that would run until the end of this year.

There is a cash incentive for every item collected.

The state will also give a RM5 reward to those who key in “Selangor” as a promotion code in the collection application.
