ENGINEERS need to think creatively to integrate ESG (environmental, social and governance) principles into their daily work, says Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) president Prof Dr Jeffrey Chiang.
Doing so, added Prof Chiang, would allow them to lead the way in building a sustainable and equitable future.
He pointed out that every effort mattered, whether it was through innovative design, responsible resource management or ethical decision-making.
“Engineers play a crucial role in promoting ESG principles through various means.
“Some examples of ESG championed by engineers include green building certifications, clean energy projects, water management systems and smart cities.
“By promoting ESG principles, we engineers can contribute towards sustainable development,” he said in his speech at the 30th anniversary and annual general meeting of the IEM Negri Sembilan Chapter.
His speech was read out by his deputy Yau Chau Fong.
“Embracing ESG principles is not only a moral need but also creates a strategic advantage that can lead to long-term success.”
Prof Chiang said IEM would continue to promote ESG ideals.
These include protecting the environment, fostering the bond between engineering technology and social needs and by complying with ethics rules and regulations.
He explained that these goals were the reason he had factored in ESG in IEM’s direction for three key events this year.
Two past events were the IEM annual dinner and awards night and the IEM Convention and Engineer Exhibition 2024.
The next event will be the 42nd Conference of Asean Federation of Engineering Organisations which will take place from Oct 22 to 25.
It had also launched the “IEM Guideline on ESG in the Built Environment” which could be downloaded from its website.
Prof Chiang praised the Negri Sembilan Chapter for its hard work in developing the state’s engineering workforce and physical infrastructure despite being one of the smaller branches in Malaysia.
At the AGM, Dr Oh Seong Por was unanimously re-elected to lead the Chapter for another term.
In his speech, Oh said the Chapter would try to organise more activities to help members further develop their skills, advance their careers and form business networks.
Oh also mooted the idea of setting up an education fund for the children of Chapter members.
