Police chief: Urgent need to address parking woes at Ipoh hospital

A NEW parking facility with ample space near Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun in Ipoh will prevent illegal parking there.

Perak police chief Comm Datuk Azizi Mat Aris said a parking lot would help deter motorists from parking illegally along Jalan Raja Ashman Shah, formerly known as Jalan Hospital.

“The police hope a new parking facility will be built.

“Such a facility will help address safety, reduce traffic congestion and inconvenience to other road users,” he said in response to the StarMetro report on Oct 4, “Critical need for larger carpark at Ipoh hospital.”

Due to the lack of parking, many hospital visitors are forced to park illegally outside the premises.

This is amid ongoing discussions for a multilevel parking lot between the state and Health Ministry.

Comm Azizi said the lack of parking had to be addressed as soon as possible due to ongoing redevelopment of the Greentown Health Clinic.

He said the Velodrome Rakyat parking lot was an alternative, but many were discouraged by the distance to the hospital.

The velodrome was reported to be 1.6km from the hospital.

“I hope the local authority will collaborate with the state government and hospital to resolve the issue as it has persisted for a long time,” added Comm Azizi.

He assured motorists who parked along the hospital road that they would not be slapped with summonses as long as the vehicles were not double-parked or obstructed traffic.

“The police has been lenient since April 2023, following an agreement between the state health executive council member and former state police chief Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri.”
