Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department Datuk Seri John Sikie Tayai is calling on Dayak women to get involved in their cultural organisation.

Speaking at the 35th anniversary dinner for Sarakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS) Sibu branch, Sikie described the organisation as a driving force for women’s progress in fields such as economics, children’s education and entrepreneurship.

More than 1,500 guests attended the celebration, including Sikie’s wife Datin Seri Melia Gelen and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg’s political secretary William Anut.

Also present were Temenggong Stanley Gramong, SIDS president Datuk Alice Jawan and SIDS Sibu chairman Angelyn Uchi Maseng.

In her welcoming remarks, Uchi reflected on SIDS’ growth since its establishment in 1988.

“When we first started, we had just 40 members. Today, we have 1,500,” she said.

Meanwhile, Sikie advised SIDS to have its own premises instead of renting or buying a commercial lot for an office.

“It is better to build your own as this allows you to design according to your needs.

“If land in urban areas is scarce or too expensive, consider looking in suburban areas such as Sibu Jaya.

“After securing the land, you can approach the Sarawak Premier to request funds for the construction,” he added.

Sikie also announced a RM50,000 allocation to SIDS Sibu for future activities. — By ANDY CHUA
