Joyous Alor Setar collegians celebrate golden jubilee

IT was a memorable reunion for Sultan Abdul Hamid College (SAHC) alumni when over 200 students from the Class of 1974 gathered for a two-day event in Alor Setar, Kedah.

The reunion commemorated the 50th anniversary of the students “graduating” from the school in 1974.

Reunion representative Tunku Munirah Tunku Mukhtar, 67, said the event kicked off with a meeting in the SAHC compound on the first day.

“After a walkabout around the college, we enjoyed a sumptuous breakfast of nasi lemak and the famous local dish Mee Goreng Abu.

“The current college principal, Shamsul Badri Ishak, also joined us on the walkabout,” she said.

Tunku Munirah said the former students also returned to a classroom for an engaging session with their former physics teacher Chong Kam Poh, who is now in his 80s.

She said the former students had to “learn” the subject again, which many had forgotten.

On the second day, over 180 former students met up at Medina Thai Palace in Alor Setar for dinner.

Tunku Munirah said the dinner was courtesy of former students Datuk Seri Yahya Abdul Jalil and Datuk Syed Zulkiflee Shahabudin.

Former students from all over the country and overseas attended the two-day reunion, she said, with some from as far as Canada and the US.

“It was a night of joy and laughter as we reminisced about our school days half-a-century ago,” said Tunku Munirah, noting that 10 former teachers also attended the event.

She said the night was full of excitement, with attendees enjoying the dinner, photo session, lucky draw and cake to mark the occasion.

Yahya also gifted a memento to the former teachers who attended the event.

Founded in 1908, SAHC is one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious schools in Malaysia.

It is also one of the country’s oldest English-medium schools. Students of this school are proudly known as “collegians”.
