SHAH Alam City Council (MBSA) claims that the fish species released at Tasik Bandaraya Shah Alam recently was not listed as foreign or prohibited in the Malaysian Fisheries Department poster on its website.
MBSA explained that the city council had released ikan patin asing, known by the scientific name Pangasianodon hypophthalmus into the lake, in view of the upcoming Shah Alam Fishing Competition 2024 on Oct 27.
“This release was conducted to help control the balance of fish species and population in the lake.
“MBSA also sourced these fish from suppliers registered with the Malaysian Fisheries Department,” the statement read.
MBSA has come under fire for releasing the fish, after the activity was posted on its Facebook page Oct 13.
Netizens criticised MBSA’s action and questioned if the city council knew about the fish being an invasive species.
The Selangor Fisheries Department also released a statement today, expressing regret over the matter.
Moving forward, MBSA stated that they would consult with the Malaysian Fisheries Department to ensure that any fish species released were permitted.
“To ensure the sustainability of the ecosystem in the lake, MBSA has implemented various initiatives, including water treatment to maintain good water quality.
“In support of efforts to reduce foreign fish species in the lake, MBSA will also award prizes to the first 100 anglers who catch foreign fish during the Shah Alam Fishing Competition on Oct 27,” it added.
