Glittering close to Para Sukma

WITH a haul of 82 gold medals, Sarawak emerged the overall champion of the Para Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2024, which the state hosted for seven days. Sarawak finished top with a medal haul of 82-53-74, followed by Sabah (62-42-32) and Johor (33-35-29).

During the closing ceremony, over 1,200 athletes from 15 teams were welcomed with applause as they marched into the stadium, accompanied by flag bearers.

In her speech, Sarawak Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah commended the athletes’ indomitable spirit, evident amid the sportsmanship and camaraderie they demonstrated in the fierce competition for medals.

“Every participant is a true champion for showing extraordinary determination.“What matters most is the teamwork and fighting spirit.

“Every para athlete who has fought in this arena has proven to be a true warrior and champion,” she said in a Bernama report.

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh congratulated all athletes who brought home medals for their states.

“Nearly every day at Para Sukma, national records and Para Sukma records have been broken.

“Congratulations on setting 22 new national records and 71 Para Sukma records,” she said.The Best Para Sukma athletes awards went to Shahafiq Abdullah from Sabah for swimming and Loh Chi Hui from Pahang for archery.

Once the Games’ flag was lowered, it was presented to representatives of Selangor which will host the next Sukma and Para Sukma in 2026.
