Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has allocated RM61.35mil in its Budget 2025 to enhance cleanliness.
The amount is part of the city council’s RM466.31mil budget for next year.
Penang Island mayor Datuk A. Rajendran said while the budget reflected a deficit due to increased salary expenses, MBPP remained focused on providing excellent service and implementing impactful local projects to benefit the community.
“While we have spent responsibly, the Federal Government’s salary revision announcement came late in the process, leading to the increased deficit for next year’s budget.
“We anticipate adjustments in Budget 2026 that will help reduce the deficit,” state publisher Buletin Mutiara reported Rajendran as saying after he presented Budget 2025 at City Hall, Esplanade, George Town.
Themed “Digitalisation and Intelligence to Building a Sustainable and Competitive City”, MBPP’s Budget 2025 outlined five focus areas.
These areas are cleanliness, health, mobility, smart initiatives and economic development.
The largest share of RM61.35mil has been allocated for cleanliness.
“The 2025 budget is designed to prioritise cleaner, healthier, smarter and more mobile city living,” he said.
Rajendran also highlighted MBPP’s digital transformation efforts, including the introduction of automatic number-plate (ANPR) recognition technology.
Additionally, information boards featuring the Air Pollutant Index (API) will be placed across Penang island, providing real-time data on air quality, the local temperature and weather forecast.
These initiatives, Rajendran said, were part of MBPP’s broader efforts to create a vibrant and liveable environment for Penang residents.
