ABOUT 1,000 reusable bags will be distributed to the public as part of Ipoh City Council’s environmental sustainability initiative.

Ipoh mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin said the bags would be given out at participating schools, malls and other business premises.

“The bags will be provided to some 585 business premises that participate in the ‘No Plastic Bag’ campaign, including supermarkets, convenience stores and pharmacies.

“The city council implemented the campaign in June 1 last year, with 20sen imposed for each plastic bag used at participating business premises on Saturdays,” he said during a certificate presentation ceremony to participants.

Rumaizi said the campaign was part of the city’s efforts to support Malaysia’s Roadmap Towards Zero Single-Use Plastics 2018-2030, which was introduced by the Federal Government in October 2018.

The city council had earlier organised the One-Minute Video Contest and Recycled Bag Design Contest to complement the campaign.

“We received 137 entries for the competitions from people of all ages,” said Rumaizi.

“The contests were aimed at promoting creativity among the younger generation and spreading environmental awareness through digital platforms.

“We are not only strengthening efforts to reduce plastic pollution but also providing opportunities for the community, especially the younger generation, to contribute to environmental sustainability through art and creativity,” he said.

Rumaizi urged people to continue supporting the campaign.

“This small step can make a big difference in reducing plastic pollution and protecting our planet for future generations.”
