Relevant agencies on standby in Selangor to deal with high tide and monsoon

SHAH ALAM: All state and district agencies involved in technical matters and rescue operations are on standby in handling both the high-tide phenomenon and Northeast Monsoon season in Selangor, says state exco Mohd Najwan Halimi.

“The Selangor Disaster Management Committee held a meeting on Oct 2 to assess the preparedness of agencies on-ground in dealing with the high-tide phenomenon,” he said of the incident that is expected to hit Selangor’s coastal areas from Oct 17 to Oct 20.

“During the meeting, the committee also discussed the preparations of agencies for the Northeast Monsoon season. The details of this meeting were presented to the state executive council during the Selangor Economic Action Meeting on Oct 10.”

Mohd Najwan, the state executive councillor in charge of disaster management, said that all District Disaster Management Committees are prepared to handle the high-tide phenomenon.

“Technical agencies, such as the Drainage and Irrigation Department, have conducted regular patrols along the coastline to ensure the flood barriers are in good condition,” he said in a press statement on Wednesday (Oct 16).

“The department is ready to deploy mobile pumps to hotspot areas should there be incidents of ‘stagnant flooding’ (banjir termenung). State-owned subsidiaries are willing to loan their pumps if there is a need for additional pumps.

“All District Disaster Operation Control Centres have been activated. Announcements about the high-tide phenomenon have been made through various mediums.

“The police, Fire and Rescue Department and Malaysian Civil Defence Force will also deploy their teams to monitor and assess risks during the high-tide period.

“These preparations also take into account the Northeast Monsoon season, which is expected to hit the country earlier this year,” said Mohd Najwan of the monsoon that is expected to start in early November and last until March 2025.
