HULU Kelang, Ampang and Hulu Langat residents are on edge after Tuesday morning’s downpour caused flash floods and landslides in several neighbourhoods.
Videos and photos made their rounds on social media, showing several areas in the Ampang Jaya and Kajang municipalities being struck by floods and landslips.
A video showing pupils standing on tables and chairs in a flooded classroom went viral, prompting a rescue operation.
The pupils of two kindergartens, Tabika Kemas Klang Gate and Tabika Kemas in Jalan Hulu Kelang, are now safe at home.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department said in a media statement that 21 pupils were rescued.
The kindergartens are closed for two days to facilitate cleaning work.
AU1 Taman Keramat resident Fatimah Kasim, 64, said her family was wary each time it rained heavily.
“I remind my children to stay alert especially if it rains in the wee hours, in case of flooding,” she said.
AU5 Taman Keramat resident who wanted to be known only as Hairul, 45, said he was sending his daughter to SK Taman Keramat when floodwaters rose.
“We quickly turned back home. I am worried about flooding in schools. Will the teachers be able to evacuate students fast enough?” he asked.
Meanwhile, Selangor infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Izham Hashim visited a site in Taman Lembah Maju where part of an open-air carpark collapsed into Sungai Kerayong on Saturday.
He was accompanied by Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) personnel.
“I have asked for a detailed report from the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) for MPAJ’s further action,” said Izham in a Facebook post.
“For now, the affected area is off-limits,” he said adding that DID and MPAJ would carry out regular inspections.
In Hulu Langat, utility cable repairs as well as cleaning works are in progress after Sungai Lui broke its banks on Tuesday.
In December 2021, several areas were completely submerged after Sungai Lui overflowed following two days of continuous rain.
Dusun Tua assemblyman Datuk Johan Abd Aziz, in a Facebook post, said works were ongoing to repair a fallen electric pole in Kampung Jawa.
In Kampung Baru Sungai Lui, KDEB Waste Management placed roll-on, roll-off (RoRo) bins for residents to dispose of bulk waste after floodwaters entered their homes, he said.
Johan said representatives from Hulu Langat Land and District Office also inspected flood-affected areas.
“A further study will be carried out to address the river overflowing problem,” he added.
