THIS is the second year that Pengerang Municipal Council (MPP) has organised Nusantara Pengerang Festival with the aim of promoting and preserving Malay culture and heritage.
Penawar assemblyman Fauziah Misri said the event sought to strengthen the Malay identity and produce a resilient generation capable of navigating modern challenges, while honouring the legacy of their ancestors.
“This year’s festival themed ‘Melayu Nusantara’ featured participation from five countries: Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and, for the first time, Brunei,” she said.
“With Brunei joining the lineup, the festival’s reach and significance have expanded.”
Fauziah said the festival promoted the cultural vibrancy of the region.
“It provides a platform for young people to connect with Malay traditions and ensure these customs continue to thrive.
“It is essential to nurture the interest of the younger generation in Malay customs and the arts as they are the future custodians of the culture,” she added.
The initiative to promote Malay culture to all segments of society, including children, seeks to ensure traditional games and customs are not forgotten amid the allure of modern gadgets and technology.
“The festival’s success will play a crucial role in ensuring the survival of Malay heritage for future generations, emphasising that the richness of this cultural legacy should not be confined to museums or lost to time,” said Fauziah.
MPP president Zihan Ismail expressed optimism about the participation of young people in the festival.
She sees it as a promising sign for the event’s future, and the active role of the next generation in preserving and revitalising cultural heritage.
“Nusantara Pengerang Festival is more than just a celebration; it is a call to preserve and cherish the unique customs that form the foundation of the Malay identity,” she said.
Zihan said that in line with Visit Johor Year 2026, the local council was planning to upgrade sites such as Kota Tinggi Cultural and Heritage Centre and Teluk Sengat food court, the latter she suggested as the place to go to for fresh seafood.
